UAS Flight Control App
Android app for real-time drone telemetry, autonomous flight, and live video. 1st place in the U.S.
Overview
Built for the California Unmanned Aerial Systems Competition, this Android app integrates the DJI SDK to stream real-time telemetry, run autonomous flight control, and show the drone’s live camera feed. The team used it in competition and placed 1st in the U.S.
Technical approach
- Logging without slowing flight control. Telemetry is written to CSV at 20 Hz on a background thread with buffered I/O, so flight-control latency stays unaffected while full position and heading logs are preserved for competition analysis.
- A codebase a team can build on. I drove a refactor of the control-system code into cleaner modules, which made feature integration smoother across a 3-person software team working through Git/GitHub code reviews.
Outcome
The app flew in competition, and the team placed 1st in the U.S.
